Volume 1, Issue 1

Hi everyone. My name is Todd Martini and I'm the proprietor of Glen Cove Computing. Since this is the first issue of Glen Cove Computing News I feel obligated to give a little background on myself. I previously worked for Providian Bancorp in San Francisco and have worked in this field for the past seven years. I have a degree in Literature and Language from a small liberal arts college so I'm not your stereotypical computer nerd. My wife, Andrea, and I were married in February 1994 and we have two dogs (Moose & Roxy). My hobbies include mountain biking, computers (what a surprise!), and tennis.

This first issue of the Glen Cove Computing News features some helpful Tech Tips, the Internet Site of the Month, the Internet Technology of the Month, and the Cartoon of the Month (sorry Dilbert is copyrighted). In the coming months I hope to add additional features that will be of use to you.

GCC Tech Tips

When typing an EMail message do not use all CAPITAL letters. On the Internet and other on-line services writing a message in capital letters is considered shouting. Remember this if you ever go on-line and it will keep you from being flamed (i.e. yelled at).
If you want to bypass your startup group when you enter Windows 3.x, hold down the right <Shift> key while Windows is loading.
To edit the Start menu in Windows 95 right-click on the Start menu and choose Explore.
If you want to save your Program Manager settings without exiting Window 3.x make sure that the Save Settings On Exit parameter is checked under the Options menu. Then hold down the left <Shift> key and choose Exit off the File menu.
Here's a shortcut for closing all your open folder windows in Windows 95. Hold down the Shift key and click on the close button (the x in the top right hand corner of the window) to close all open windows.
If you want to restart Windows 95 without rebooting your computer hold down the left <Shift> key and choose Shut Down off the Start menu and then Restart the computer.
Still need some icons to complete your perfect desktop. Windows 95 provides a number of new icons in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. You can find some of these new icons in cool.dll, shell32.dll, and pifmgr.dll.

Internet Site of the Month

The Internet Site of the month for November is the Virtual Software Library. A great search tool for finding the best shareware available on the Internet. A word of warning: don't attempt to access this site during the day unless you want to be stuck in a permanent wait state.
